Real Transformations

Before & After Teen Therapy

Real stories from Boston families who’ve seen their teens transform through counseling.

BEFORE THERAPY

“My 15-year-old was constantly anxious, refusing to go to school, and having panic attacks before tests. She was isolating herself from friends and spent most of her time in her room.”

AFTER THERAPY

“Now she’s back in school full-time, joined the debate team, and actually has friends over on weekends. She uses the coping skills she learned when she feels anxious.”

Jennifer M., Parent

BEFORE THERAPY

“Our son was angry all the time — slamming doors, yelling, refusing to talk to us. Family dinners were a nightmare. We walked on eggshells around him.”

AFTER THERAPY

“He still has emotions (he’s a teenager!), but now he expresses them constructively. We can actually talk through problems. Last week, he apologized on his own after an argument.”

David & Lisa K., Parents

BEFORE THERAPY

“My daughter was dealing with depression after a tough breakup. She stopped doing things she loved, grades dropped, and she said she felt ‘numb’ all the time.”

AFTER THERAPY

“She’s rediscovered her love for art, her grades are back up, and she told me she ‘feels like herself again.’ She even joined a new club at school.”

What to Expect

Your Journey to a Healthier Family

Wondering what therapy actually looks like? Here’s a realistic timeline of what you can expect.

Week 1-2

Building Trust

Your teen meets Jessica in a comfortable, judgment-free space. No pressure to open up — just getting to know each other and understanding what your teen is going through.

She didn’t push me to talk about stuff I wasn’t ready for. That made it easier.

Week 3-6

Learning Skills

Your teen learns practical coping strategies for anxiety, stress, and big emotions. These are skills they can use right away — at school, with friends, and at home.

I learned this breathing thing that actually helps when I’m stressed about tests.

Week 7-12

Making Progress

You'll start noticing changes — fewer arguments, better communication, improved mood. Your teen applies what they've learned in real-life situations.

My mom said she’s noticed I’m not as irritable. I didn’t even realize.

Week 1-2

Building Independence

Your teen becomes more confident in managing their emotions. Sessions may space out as they build independence. You have tools to handle future challenges.

I feel like I can handle stuff now. I know what to do when things get hard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about teen therapy at JHS Counseling.

We specialize in supporting children (0–12), teens, and young adults, as well as parents navigating the challenges of raising kids and finding balance. Each stage comes with unique emotional and social needs—and we tailor therapy to meet your child or family where they are.

Both! We offer virtual sessions, in-home support, and in-community therapy (whether that’s at a local park, a rented library room, or your favorite coffee shop.) And soon, we’ll be expanding to in-office sessions as well. Wherever you feel most comfortable, we’ll meet you there.

Therapy here isn’t about lectures—it’s about connection, play, and real conversations. For younger children, we often use play-based and expressive approaches to help them process emotions and build confidence. For teens, therapy may look more like open dialogue—space to explore identity, friendships, and coping skills in a safe, judgment-free environment.
At this time, JHS Counseling is an out-of-network provider, which means we don’t bill insurance directly. However, we’re happy to provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. We also offer sliding scale fees to make therapy more accessible for families.
The length of therapy varies depending on your teen’s needs and goals. Some families see significant improvement in 8-12 sessions, while others prefer ongoing support. We regularly check in about progress and adjust our approach to ensure we’re meeting your family’s needs effectively.
